Programme Brief
The Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDip Ed) programme is an internationally recognised and HEC accredited course of study.
The programme is offered in four specialisation routes:
- Leadership and management
- Learning and teaching in higher education
- Mentoring, coaching and supervision
- Quality assurance
The programme aims to enable education and education related practitioners, who are seeking professional development, to further draw on their academic expertise to better steer their capacity to self-assess their own practice and act on same.
Successful completion of the PGDip Ed programme and of a 10-credit ‘bridging module’ makes students eligible to access Year 2 of the MA Ed programme with St Mary’s University, London, where students benefit from fees lower than UK home students.
Target Audience
This programme targets teachers, educational practitioners and paraprofessionals in the field of education, as well as those who are already in post or are aspiring to positions in areas of educational leadership, administration, inspection, quality assurance, or mentoring.
Note:
- The ‘Learning and teaching in higher education’ specialisation route is open to candidates who are working full-time or part-time in a higher education or post-secondary institution.
- The ‘Mentoring, coaching and supervision’ specialisation route is also open to candidates from fields other than education and who are currently assuming or intending to assume mentoring/ coaching/supervision roles in their organization, such as in nursing or tourism.
- The ‘Quality assurance’ route will be of interest to education professionals who are concerned with effectiveness and improvement at classroom and/or school level, both within and external to the school.
Structure
There are four modules that run successively, with each module carrying 20 CATS points.
Duration and Delivery
The intake of the 16-month programme is January. The modules are run in a blended approach of synchronous, face-to-face and asynchronous online contact.
The programme is delivered by qualified and adequately credentialled tutors, often intervening in pairs/ teams to better support students and to bring different critical perspectives.
Assessment
The modules are assessed through coursework. Dedicated sessions to discuss the assessment task and criteria are provided. Formative feedback is offered on a draft section of students’ work, which is followed by group/ individual tutorials to clarify feedback and support students to improve towards their final submission.
Support system
Further support is offered to students in the form of optional academic enrichment workshops. These sessions aim to provide targeted support in areas such as academic literacies and study skills when studying at Level 9 in the field of education.
Quality assurance
The PGDip Ed programme is quality assured by MIE’s internal quality assurance system as well as by St Mary’s University to ensure the course meets international standards.
The representative from St Mary’s University produces an external quality assurance report after engaging in the following activities:
- online class observations
- moderation of a sample of assignments across modules
- observation of moderation meetings
- focus-group discussion with a sample of students
- meetings with the tutors
